A hated former New York Jets coach has landed on his feet.

NFL Insider Aaron Wilson revealed on social media that the New England Patriots have hired Charles London.

Last season, London served as the Jets’ quarterbacks coach. However, Aaron Glenn fired him in January after one season on the job.

This will be a reunion for London. Patriots beat reporter Taylor Kyles explained that, “Charles London was a QB coach & pass game coordinator for Mike Vrabel’s Titans in 2023. London also overlapped with Vrabel in Houston, where he served as the Texans’ RB coach after following Bill O’Brien from Penn State.”

The Reason London Was Hated by Jets Fans

Last offseason, head coach Aaron Glenn prided himself on his ability to put a competent staff together.

One of the first splashes he made was signing veteran quarterback Justin Fields to a two-year $40 million contract with $30 million of that guaranteed.

Shortly after that signing, Fields explained how he and his coaching staff will unlock Fields in 2025.

“Obviously we want to utilize his legs, but we also want him to play quarterback,” Glenn said during the 2025 NFL’s League Meetings last year n West Palm Beach, Fla via team reporter Ethan Greenberg. “This offseason, we’re going to allow him during OTAs to go out there and run an offense. We’re going to make sure we’re going to surround him with the right type of people that’s going to make him successful.”

“I think he’s a dynamic player and I think there’s more that we can get out of that player and I’m looking forward to that,” Glenn added via Greenberg. “We’re going to let him play quarterback. That’s what he’s always wanted to do. I’m not saying he hasn’t had a chance to play that, do that in other places. That’s not my issue. I know what I want to do with that player. Obviously want to utilize his legs but want to give him a chance to go out there and play quarterback.”

Bold words from Glenn. Not only did he not get the most out of Fields, but he actually got less than any other coaching staff had ever gotten out of him.

Last season, the Jets averaged 140 passing yards per game, which was last in the league. It should be noted that it was last in the league by a 25-yard gap. That was the largest gap between any two teams in the league, per ESPN.

Fields appeared in nine games in 2025. In four of those games, he threw for fewer than 60 passing yards. The Jets didn’t take Fields to another level; they took the game of football back to the 1940s. Just to be clear, that isn’t a compliment.

London’s Very Questionable Resume

So what does that have to do with London?

Well, he was the quarterbacks coach, so he was part of that all-star team that Glenn touted as the “right guys” to prop up Fields.

London, 50, is a former running back who played at Duke. After his playing days, he got into coaching in 2004. London has been coaching football for 21 years. 16 of those 21 years have been spent working with running backs. That makes sense considering that was his position.

However, in 2021, he just suddenly became a quarterbacks coach out of nowhere. A longtime college running back just randomly decided that he would start coaching quarterbacks. London has been coaching quarterbacks for the last five years.

That lack of a resume came under harsh scrutiny from Jets fans. Why did AG assign essentially an RB coach with the very important task of developing Fields?

When London was fired by the team after one year, fans celebrated in the social media streets. Now the Jets will face off against him twice a year inside the division.
