Mark Daigneault praises Shai Gilgeous-Alexander after record-breaking performance

The Oklahoma City Thunder hosted the Boston Celtics Thursday night in a matchup between two of the league's strongest teams.

Both sides were battling with injuries though, as the Thunder were without notable starters, Jalen Williams and Isaiah Hartenstein.

The Celtics were also without two of their top contributors, missing Jayson Tatum and Derrick White.

Without Williams, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander shouldered the scoring load, scoring 35 points to go along with nine assists, six rebounds, three blocks and two steals.

Chet Holmgren and Ajay Mitchell were the only other Thunder players in double-figures, combining to score 29.

With Gilgeous-Alexander's 35 points, he broke a streak set by Wilt Chamberlain for the most consecutive games scoring at least 20 points or more (127).

Chamberlains record had stood since 1963.

Following the game, head coach Mark Daigneault spoke on Gilgeous-Alexander's presence. “He’s the coolest guy in the room. I’ve said that before. He’s got great poise. Everything that happens for him, it’s like he expected it to happen, including the rise that he’s had as a player. I can’t say enough about the guy.”

Another victory marked Oklahoma City's seventh consecutive, as they continue to put pressure on the San Antonio Spurs in the race for the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference.

The Spurs lost Thursday to the Denver Nuggets, meaning that the Thunder now have a three and a half game lead over second place.

The Thunder will have both Friday and Saturday off before hosting the Minnesota Timberwolves Sunday afternoon.
