Packers rumor fits with 298-TD free agent QB to replace Malik Willis

The Green Bay Packers have a job to fill: backup quarterback.

Malik Willis signed with the Miami Dolphins in free agency, and while the Packers certainly feel good about their starting QB, Jordan Love, they need a QB2.

Free agency will almost certainly be the place they do that. The only question becomes which option is the best one for the Packers, and can Green Bay get a contract done.

ESPN's Bill Barnwell threw out a fit in a new article on Friday that hasn't been suggested much: Kirk Cousins.

Cousins, recently released by the Falcons, has thrown 298 NFL touchdowns between Washington, Minnesota and Atlanta.

He's likely not going to get a starting chance anywhere. That means it might make sense for him to look for the best spot as a backup.

The Packers could be that team.

"For Cousins, the question might be more about what he hopes to accomplish than where he ends up," Barnwell writes. "Is Cousins' goal to have the best opportunity to play? If so, the Browns or Steelers seem like obvious landing spots. Is he hoping to win a Super Bowl before retiring? If so, Cousins is probably looking at a strict backup role. A reunion with Kyle Shanahan seemed to be in the cards for years before the 49ers went down a different path, and unless San Francisco trades Mac Jones, there won't be any need for Cousins there. What about another perennial winner?"

That's when Barnwell suggests the Packers. He points out that Jordan Love has averaged missing two games per year, and writes that Cousins would be a "solid backup."

That's really the word you want alongside your backup QB, "solid." Cousins can still be that in a QB2 role, and maybe it's meant to happen in Green Bay.
