Raiders predicted to land surprising free agent WR to help Fernando Mendoza

The Las Vegas Raiders are expected to take Indiana QB Fernando Mendoza with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.

As far as all their other roster moves, they can't afford to take shortcuts in building around the soon-to-be face of their franchise.

They've already got the star RB, Ashton Jeanty, and the star TE, Brock Bowers.

Wide receiver is the spot where Vegas can keep upgrading, even after signing Jalen Nailor earlier this week.

That's why ESPN's Bill Barnwell wrote on Friday that the Raiders are the best free agent landing spot for Jauan Jennings, the former 49ers WR who is surprisingly still available.

"They will be running a Shanahan-inspired offense under new coach Klint Kubiak, and while there's less money than expected in the coffers after the Maxx Crosby trade was rescinded, Vegas can't afford to scrimp on help for likely first overall pick Fernando Mendoza," Barnwell writes. "The Raiders added receiver Jalen Nailor in free agency and have young wideouts such as Jack Bech, Dont'e Thornton Jr. and Tre Tucker in the mix. But Jennings would step in as a reliable, valuable target for Mendoza in the short term, with the Raiders likely to find their eventual WR1 in the years to come."

The Raiders may not even start Mendoza in Week 1, depending on how comfortable everything is feeling, but whenever they decide to throw him into the fire, they need to have the best possible support system for him.

If anything, Jennings has been underrated during his career. He grades out very well in most advanced metrics, but he played a variety of different roles in his time with the 49ers.

Vegas would be able to count on him to get open and to make tough catches to help Mendoza out.

With money left to spend, the Raiders can keep boosting Mendoza's chances of early success with a signing like this one.
