Fenerbahce GM explains key challenge in NBA, EuroLeague, and FIBA talks

Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul GM Derya Yannier addressed the ongoing discussions about the future of European basketball and the potential NBA Europe project. He said the biggest obstacle in talks between the NBA, EuroLeague, and FIBA is leverage, as stakeholders often prioritize their own agendas.

The future of European basketball continues to spark debate, especially with discussions around an upcoming NBA Europe project. While different organizations look for ways to grow the game, cooperation between the NBA, EuroLeague, and FIBA remains one of the biggest questions.

Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul general manager Derya Yannier believes the leagues must eventually work together. However, he also pointed to one key factor that makes those talks difficult.

"Leverage," he said in an interview with Giorgos Kyriakidis of Sportal. "I am sure everyone wants to see European basketball grow but it's not always easy to leave specific agendas aside and think purely about the game itself."

The balance of power between organizations has often complicated discussions about the structure of European basketball. Despite that, Yannier still believes cooperation is possible, especially if all sides recognize the value that already exists in the current system.

"I would like to believe that it is possible," he added. "NBA obviously is a great brand, and with all that they bring to the table, I see this as more of an opportunity rather than a challenge. On the other hand, they also need to respect what all these teams have invested and created over the years, which is a top-level basketball product. Therefore, I strongly believe that if we waste this opportunity and keep creating diversities, we will only damage our products and no side will really benefit from it. So, to your question, I believe and I hope that sooner than later there will be some sort of a collaboration."

In recent months, reports about a potential NBA Europe competition have gained momentum, with a possible launch discussed for the coming years. Such a move could force top clubs across the continent to evaluate their long-term strategy.

For a club like Fenerbahce, Yannier explained that any decision would involve much more than sporting or financial considerations.

"Obviously, when deciding strategically about a club's future, all these aspects do matter. On a different note, Fenerbahce is not just a basketball club, but it's a huge sports club with nine different branches and tens of millions of supporters. So while taking a decision like this, not only you are responsible towards your supporters, but you also hold a serious responsibility towards your congress members, which is over fifty thousand people. So all that being said, hopefully a fruitful resolution for European basketball's future will be held soon," the GM concluded.
