Newcastle United could revive their interest in Liam Delap, according to Daily Mail reporter Craig Hope.

The reliable journalist says that the Chelsea player is one of two strikers that Eddie Howe’s side are looking at ahead of the summer transfer window, along with Inter Milan’s Pio Esposito.

Delap opted to make the £30m move to Stamford Bridge last year, having rejected approaches from the Magpies, Manchester United and other teams.

However, there are already question marks about his future, following a difficult first season with his new club.

Delap has struggled with form and fitness at Chelsea

The 23-year-old has found the back of the net just twice in 29 appearances since moving to the Club World Cup winners.

Delap has had a couple of significant injuries that have hampered him too. A hamstring problem kept him sidelined for a couple of months near the start of the season, while he also dislocated his shoulder in mid-December.

Why do Newcastle want the player?

The Magpies splashed out £124m on two forwards last summer, Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa, but neither has fully convinced. Buy a Newcastle shirt from JD Sports here.

Woltemade has, at the very least, managed to hit double figures for goals (10 in 43 games), but he hasn’t met expectations after a £69m outlay. There are already suggestions that he could move back to Germany.

Wissa, meanwhile, had to overcome a significant knee injury before making his club in early December. Since his return to action, though, he has struggled to find the back of the net, scoring just 3 times in 21 appearances.
