C.J. Gardner-Johnson is on the move again. The veteran safety has a tenure akin to one who seldom stays with a single group for long. Since 2019, he has had stints with the Saints, Eagles, Lions, Texans, Ravens, and Bears. Some fans on social media say Gardner-Johnson is passed around. The former Chicago Bears safety is a Super Bowl winner who can stimulate a defense.
He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.48 seconds. He recorded 20 interceptions and 55 pass breakups over seven professional seasons. Gardner-Johnson, who also excels as a versatile nickel cornerback, has a missed tackle rate is 17.2%.
The Buffalo Bills and their personnel made a move on Thursday. ESPN Insider Adam Schefter said Gardner-Johnson gave his assent for a one-year deal worth up to $6 million. This choice is a jolt because his outspoken personality is different from the convention under Coach Sean McDermott.
“I’m starting to get real worried about this Bears defense next year,” a fan reacted.

Gardner-Johnson was a 2019 fourth-round pick out of Florida by the New Orleans Saints. He has played in 87 regular-season games and 13 playoff appearances. One fan said they wondered how the team got a starting safety after they thought free agency was over.
“Wait, how did the Bills get a starting safety? I thought FA was over yesterday at 4pm?” another commented.
Another fan said they are starting to get really worried about the defense of the Bears next year.
“Cam Lewis and C.J. Gardner-Johnson swap teams with Lewis at half the price,” one wrote.

Defensive Coordinator Jim Leonhard may use the NFL interceptions co-leader in the slot to defend dominant receivers. This allows rookie Cole Bishop to play closer to the line in man coverage. Gardner-Johnson can also help in deep zone coverages to use his ball-hawking skills. The organization says veteran leaders like Christian Benford will help him join the defensive room.
“It’s undeniable that he’s a playmaking defensive back, and it’s undeniable that teams really don’t want to keep him around,” Joe Marino, host of Locked On Bills, said. “He’s a loud player, he’s feisty, he’s had fights with teammates in practice, he’s been ejected from games for multiple personal fouls. This is a different kind of dude.”
In a nutshell, the Bills and their staff believe this move is feasible to win.
