T
he San Francisco 49ers are in the midst of a very important offseason, and they are already wasting no time in filling much needed holes. Agreeing to contracts with several prominent pieces, including adding wide receiver Mike Evans and bringing back linebacker Dre Greenlaw, the 49ers are serious about returning to Super Bowl contention after coming up well short in 2025. And on Thursday, March 12, the 49ers added a player to bolster another position of need– the defensive back core.
Agreeing to a one-year deal with former Las Vegas Raiders and Green Bay Packers star, Nate Hobbs, the 49ers got much needed help in a defensive back room that has been up and down in recent seasons. Hobbs, a former All-Rookie team selection, will compete for the starting job opposite Deommodore Lenoir and give the 49ers another established veteran who wreak havoc for opposing team’s passing attacks.
Hobbs Joins the 49ers
First reported by NFL insider, Jordan Schultz, the 49ers are giving Hobbs a one-year, $4.5 million deal– not long after the Packers released him. 49ers new defensive coordinator Raheem Morris brings a different type of defense to San Francisco, making Hobbs the perfect fit for what San Francisco is building on the defensive side of the ball. While the team finished 12-5 last season, injuries combined with issues at certain spots prevented the 49ers from truly being threats but this offseason, the team wants to change that narrative.
“The 49ers are expected to sign former Raiders and Packers CB Nate Hobbs to a 1-year deal,” Schultz said. “The 26-year old was recently released by Green Bay and is now joining the Raheem Morris defense in San Francisco.”
Hobbs is still young and with the 49ers fielding one of the NFL’s oldest rosters, getting younger, cheaper and faster is a must for a franchise hungry to win their first Super Bowl in over three decades. Hobbs checks all the boxes and will look to further evolve into a superstar in the red and gold.
Hobbs’ Career
Drafted in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft by the Raiders, Hobbs spent the first four seasons of his career in Las Vegas, putting together an up-and-down tenure with the franchise. After his contract expired following the ’24 campaign, Hobbs signed a massive four-year, $48 million contract with the Packers but after struggling, and suffering a knee injury late in the year, the team opted to cut ties with him and give new defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon a clean slate to work with.
Now Hobbs joins a San Francisco team that will surely welcome his presence with open arms, hoping that he is the key to the 49ers’ regaining that ferocious style on defense.
