New Pittsburgh Steelers RB Rico Dowdle claps back at old team

The new NFL league year has begun, and teams are finalizing reported trade agreements and legal tampering deals with free agents.

The Pittsburgh Steelers stayed particularly busy. General Manager Omar Khan signed multiple free agents and also addressed wide receiver stability through a trade.

Among the new additions is former Dallas Cowboys and Carolina Panthers running back Rico Dowdle. The Steelers formally introduced Dowdle to the media and Steelers Nation today.

During his introductory session, Dowdle told reporters he is looking forward to facing his former team, the Panthers, in 2026. After hearing remarks from Panthers fans, Dowdle also took a subtle shot at his former team.

Dowdle enjoyed a productive season in Carolina. He rushed for more than 1,000 yards and scored six touchdowns, which makes the criticism from some Panthers fans somewhat surprising.

Still, Dowdle felt compelled to respond and shared his thoughts about the Panthers’ playbook. He may also still feel some frustration after Carolina failed to present a strong contract offer.

Dowdle’s arrival with the Steelers also reunites him with head coach Mike McCarthy. McCarthy, a Pittsburgh native, coached the back-to-back 1,000-yard rusher during their time together in Dallas.

The NFL schedule is expected to be released in May. One thing already stands out: Dowdle could have an opportunity for a revenge-game performance in back-to-back seasons.
