L'Jarius Sneed was selected by the Kansas City Chiefs in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft with the 138th overall pick
The Washington Commanders were expected to be one of the most active teams in free agency, and they have not disappointed. In the past four days, general manager Adam Peters and the Commanders’ front office have added nine new big-name players to their team. On offense, they have addedrunning back Rachaad White andtight end Chig Okonkwo. While on defense, they’ve signeddefensive ends Odafe Oweh, K’Lavon Chaisson, and Charles Omenihu, defensive tackle Tim Settle, linebackerLeo Chenal, cornerback Amik Robertson, andsafety Nick Cross. Looking at the Commanders’ transactions so far, there’s been a clear focus on adding talent to the defensive side of the ball, and they might not be done yet.
L’Jarius Sneed Could Be Set Up For A Fresh Start With the Commanders
L'Jarius Sneed Coverage
GettyCornerback L’Jarius Sneed was decent in coverage in 2025, allowing a completion rate of 58.2% and a passer rating of 78.1 when targeted.
Adam Schefter reported on March 13th that the Tennessee Titans are releasing cornerback L’Jarius Sneed. Sneed signed a four-year,$76.4 million contract with the Titans after being traded to them from the Kansas City Chiefs only two years ago. Sneed only played in 12 games over the past two seasons due to knee and quad injuries.
His play on the field was modest at best compared to his time with the Chiefs.Pro Football Focus graded him as the 117th-best cornerback out of 117 in 2024 and the 105th-best out of 114 in 2025. This is quite a steep drop from when he was the 35th-highest-ranked corner out of 128 options in 2023. Injuries and lack of scheme fit are likely the biggest reasons for Sneed’s release. However, Sneed was alsoindictedin December of 2024 on a misdemeanor charge for failure to report a felony during an incident.
All this to be said, Sneed’s release is surprising given the nature of the contract he received, but a fresh start was clearly needed. The Commanders’ new defensive back duo of Mike Sainristil and Amik Robertson is set to be an improvement from last season, but taking a flier on Sneed could provide massive upside.
Commanders DC Daronte Jones Could Revive L’Jarius Sneed’s Career
The Commanders still boast the second most cap space in the league behind only the Titans, and Sneed would be a cheap, low-risk option. Yahoo Sports’ Mike Moraitis believes that Sneed would provide value to the Commanders’ defensive backs group. “Washington could use someone else on the outside, and preferably someone with experience like Sneed,”Moraitis wrote.
The Commanders were graded as the 30th-best coverage team last season according toPFF. New defensive coordinator Daronte Jones was previously the defensive backs coach for the Minnesota Vikings. Last year, under Jones, the Vikings’ secondary was one of the best units in the league. “The group allowed the second-fewest passing yards per game (158.5) and generated eight interceptions. They allowed the second-fewest completions in the league, and 13 players had at least one pass breakup,” Commanders senior writerZach Selby recappedabout Jones.
Jones is the perfect candidate to revive Sneed to the player he was before and show why he received a big contract in the first place.
