Manchester City ‘closely monitoring’ 21-year-old West Ham star ahead of potential summer swoop

Several players have represented both West Ham United and Manchester City over the years, with some even moving directly between the two clubs.

Goalkeeper Joe Hart, defender Pablo Zabaleta, and striker Carlos Tevez are among the names who have worn both shirts, while David James and Frank Lampard also had spells connected to each side during their careers.

Manchester City are reportedly among the clubs tracking West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes ahead of a possible summer move.

According to Sports Boom, the Premier League champions have been closely assessing the Portuguese youngster’s performances throughout the season.

City scouts are believed to have attended several matches to evaluate Fernandes’ qualities in detail. Their focus has been on his defensive awareness against possession-dominant teams and his ability to dictate the rhythm of games during intense midfield battles.

Fernandes joined West Ham from Southampton last summer and has wasted little time establishing himself as one of the league’s most exciting young midfielders.

However, West Ham are not expected to entertain offers lightly. Reports suggest the club would demand between £55 million and £65 million should a formal bid arrive — close to triple the amount they originally paid to bring him to the London Stadium.

Fernandes Attracting Interest Across the Premier League

Manchester City are far from the only club keeping tabs on Fernandes. Arsenal are also believed to be evaluating the 21-year-old as they look to strengthen Mikel Arteta’s midfield options ahead of next season.

The Gunners’ recruitment team reportedly view Fernandes as a natural fit for their possession-based style, with the midfielder capable of controlling games while also contributing defensively.

Meanwhile, Manchester United and Liverpool are also said to be monitoring his development. United scouts in particular have attended multiple matches to analyse his technical ability, work rate and capacity to cover ground — traits that have helped him stand out during his debut season at West Ham.

With several of the Premier League’s biggest clubs now tracking his progress, Fernandes is quickly becoming one of the most in-demand young midfielders in England. For West Ham, holding onto such a prized asset could prove increasingly difficult if major offers arrive this summer.
