“It Is Official” 49ers Sign Former Packers’ Starter, 62 Career Games (Breaking)

The San Francisco 49ers bounced back strongly in the 2025 NFL season, posting a 12-5 record to finish third in the NFC West and secure a playoff berth after a disappointing 6-11 campaign the prior year. Under head coach Kyle Shanahan and GM John Lynch, the 49ers scored 437 points (25.7 per game, 10th in the NFL) while allowing 371 (21.8 per game, 13th overall), per Pro Football Reference.

They clinched the playoffs following a Week 11 win over the Arizona Cardinals and a Detroit Lions loss in Week 16, then upset the Philadelphia Eagles 23-19 in the Wild Card Round before falling 41-6 to the Seattle Seahawks in the Divisional Round—a lopsided defeat that ended their postseason run but highlighted their resilience amid injuries. However, their defense is getting some reinforcements.

49ers Bolster Secondary with Nate Hobbs Signing

The San Francisco 49ers have quickly added depth to their secondary, signing former Green Bay Packers cornerback Nate Hobbs to a one-year contract worth up to $4.5 million, according to sources confirmed to PackersNews. The deal represents a bargain compared to the $6.25 million roster bonus the Packers would have paid to retain him for 2026, and it’s roughly half of the $8.8 million he was slated to earn this season.

Hobbs, who signed a four-year, $48 million contract with the Packers in free agency last offseason, was released by Green Bay after declining his roster bonus on March 10. Injuries hampered his 2025 performance, including three separate knee issues that limited his impact.

According to Pro Football Reference, Hobbs has played in 62 career games (43 starts) through 2025, recording 308 total tackles (214 solo), 3 sacks, 3 forced fumbles, 1 fumble recovery, 21 passes defensed, and 3 interceptions. In his lone season with the Packers in 2025, he appeared in 11 games with 5 starts, tallying 26 tackles (13 solo), 2 tackles for loss, and 2 passes defensed.

The 49ers see Hobbs as a potential contributor if he can stay healthy, offering veteran experience to a defense under new coordinator Raheem Morris that aims to rebound from the late-season and playoff struggles.

Packers Pivot in Secondary Remake

Green Bay opted to move on from Hobbs and pivoted by signing cornerback Benjamin St-Juste to a two-year, $10 million deal. This fits into a broader defensive overhaul for the Packers this week, which included the departures of linebacker Quay Walker and defensive tackle Colby Wooden. Green Bay has countered by adding defensive tackle Javon Hargrave in free agency and trading for linebacker Zaire Franklin.

For 49ers fans, adding Hobbs provides low-risk upside to a secondary looking to improve coverage and depth ahead of the 2026 campaign. If he regains form, he could become a key piece in San Francisco’s push to reclaim NFC West dominance.

Stay tuned for more San Francisco 49ers offseason updates as the team continues building for another deep playoff run!
