Newcastle United have been without the midfielder since January.
It’s been six weeks since Miley last kicked a ball for the Magpies after he sustained muscle damage in the 1-1 draw away to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on January 28.
An initial assessment determined Miley had suffered a dead leg, however, it then became apparent that the damage had extended to the muscle.
Miley was named on the bench for the 4-1 Premier League defeat to Liverpool three days after Paris, but Howe revealed after the game that he had no intention of using the midfielder.
Lewis Miley targets return for Barcelona second leg
The 19-year-old has been ruled out of 13 matches in total but has been targeting the Barcelona second leg as his return date.
Speaking at the North East Football Writers’ Association a fortnight ago, having been named as the Young Men’s Player of the Year, Miley said: “It’s getting there now.
“I got a knock to my leg and it’s caused some muscle damage. It’s been very frustrating but hopefully I am back out there soon and doing what I love.
“I’ll hopefully be back before the international break and hopefully back for a couple of games before that. I am hoping for the Barcelona away game, it will be a very good game to be back for.
“I was in really good form when I was playing, it’s been frustrating with the time when it came - but I need to be positive, keep looking forward and look forward to the games when I’m back.”
Eddie Howe casts doubt over Lewis Miley return v Barcelona
But when asked if Miley would indeed be back for the visit to the Camp Nou, Howe cast doubt over that being the case.
He said on Friday: “Yeah, we were hoping that he'd be fit for that game and I don't actually know if that's deviated at all. I mean, he's not training with the group currently.
“He's on the grass now running again and working incredibly hard but all the feedback I've had from the medical team is that we just have to be careful with this injury.
“We don't want it to turn into something a lot more serious, so, it's gone on longer than anyone had hoped but the main thing is that he comes back fit.”
Bruno Guimaraes back for Barcelona - but only as a spectator
Miley is one of two key midfielders injured, with Bruno Guimaraes missing the past month with a hamstring injury.
Guimaraes has undergone the first part of his recovery his Brazil and while he isn’t expected back playing until after the international break, the club’s skipper is set to join his teammates to cheer them on at the Camp Nou.
Howe told NewcastleWorld: “I think his plan, typical Bruno, he wants to come to Barcelona and support the team.
“We hope that he won't be too far away once he's back with us. We'll obviously have to assess him. I know he's been working incredibly hard on his rehab with the Brazilian national team physios and doctors, so I think he'll be in a good place.
“Yeah, and he's such a big player. So I'd love to think by the time the international break has ended he'll be back, fit and available.”
