Jamie Carragher accuses Liam Rosenior of developing an ‘obsession’ at Chelsea that’s hurting them

Jamie Carragher has suggested that Liam Rosenior is partly responsible for Filip Jorgensen’s error in Chelsea’s 5-2 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.

Jorgensen gave away a goal in the Champions League clash, and the Blues never recovered from it.

Unsurprisingly, the goalkeeper is receiving a lot of criticism for it, but Carragher thinks Rosenior is also to blame.

What should Liam Rosenior’s next move be?🤔

Jamie Carragher claims Liam Rosenior is obsessed about going through the middle

Since taking over at Chelsea, one thing that Carragher has noticed about Rosenior is that he is insistent on his team playing through the middle.

Against PSG, it backfired, according to the Liverpool legend. Speaking on CBS Sports (11/03/2026), Carragher said: “So when you play centrally, as Chelsea and Rosenior like to do, and the opposition know that you like to do, look, they’re high out of the box, he [Jorgensen] plays a really good pass.

“But then, they go forward, a great attack, so he was part of a lot of good play from Chelsea throughout a lot of the game. And that’s what he wants from his goalkeepers. But you’ve got to remember, the two passes and the good passes were central, but they were on his right foot. He’s now in a situation where, don’t forget it’s 2-2, he can go left, he can go right. But no, there’s an obsession with going through the centre.

“So, he is on his left foot. He’s not on his right foot, so he’s going to be weaker on that pass. He can’t push it in as hard. So, is he trying to play into central midfield? Or is he waiting for Cole Palmer there? It’s just so narrow to try to get it between players, and it’s a huge mistake.”

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia has suggested that PSG wanted to win more, hence their victory, but Rosenior’s tactics and Jorgensen’s error were obviously the catalyst behind the French club’s triumph.

PSG still have to travel to Stamford Bridge for the second leg, but the tie is done and dusted. Chelsea winning by a clear four-goal margin against the European champions is impossible.

They need to put all of their focus into Saturday’s Premier League clash against Newcastle United.

Liam Rosenior’s team selection and in-game management also questionable

Chelsea’s desire to constantly go through the middle was not the only issue on Wednesday. Robert Sanchez could have easily made the same mistake, but starting Jorgensen over him was always a gamble.

Jorgensen has never really convinced in a Chelsea shirt, nor has he delivered against top opposition. Sanchez has, including against PSG last summer.

Rosenior’s decision to sub off Palmer and Joao Pedro also has to be questioned. They are Chelsea’s two best attacking players, and the team lost all of its attacking threat once the duo were withdrawn from the game.

How must the players feel?

All in all, it was a really bad night for Rosenior, not just Jorgensen. Hopefully it is an experience that the young Chelsea head coach can learn from. Rosenior has to if he wants to last long at Stamford Bridge.
