Arsenal are reportedly preparing a blockbuster summer move for Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali, with fresh claims suggesting the Gunners could offer €100 million and a £200,000-per-week contract to lure the Italian international to the Emirates Stadium.
According to recent transfer reports circulating in TuttoJuve, Mikel Arteta’s side are exploring the possibility of signing the Italian as part of a major midfield reinforcement ahead of next season. The proposal being discussed would see Arsenal submit a bid worth around £100m for Tonali, a figure believed to be close to Newcastle’s valuation of the player.
Tonali has established himself as one of Newcastle’s most influential players since arriving from AC Milan in 2023. Despite serving a lengthy suspension earlier in his Premier League career, the Italian midfielder has rebuilt his reputation and become a central figure in Eddie Howe’s midfield.
ARSENAL have been linked with Tonali for several months. Reports suggest the club explored the possibility of signing him during the winter transfer window, but a deal never progressed beyond early enquiries.
Interest has intensified again ahead of the summer window, with Arsenal believed to view Tonali as an elite-level addition capable of elevating their midfield. Newcastle, however, remain in a strong negotiating position. The Italy international is under a long-term contract and the club would reportedly demand at least £100m to consider a sale.
Competition could also complicate matters for Arsenal. Manchester United, Manchester City and several European clubs have been linked with the midfielder, potentially setting up a multi-club bidding battle if Newcastle signal a willingness to sell.
DO Arsenal actually need Tonali?
Arteta already has a strong group of central midfielders including Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi, Martin Ødegaard and other rotation options. Spending £100m on another central midfielder could be viewed as a luxury rather than a necessity, particularly when Arsenal may prioritise a striker or wide attacker in the summer.
Tonali’s profile — a deep-lying playmaker with defensive bite — would overlap somewhat with Rice’s role. He could provide additional control and tactical flexibility, but it is difficult to argue that midfield is currently *ARSENAL*’s weakest area.
In reality, a move for Tonali might only make sense if Arteta plans a tactical reshuffle or expects departures in the midfield department. Otherwise, committing such a huge fee to a position where Arsenal are already strong may not represent the most efficient use of resources.
