New Blues signing Noah: 'I wouldn’t have picked anywhere else'

Mawene has joined Blues on loan from Preston North End for the rest of the season.

And the midfielder is excited to be at Roots Hall.

“I wouldn’t have picked anywhere else in the league to come to,” said Mawene.

“I’m joining a club with a really good opportunity and it’s a club which deserves to be higher up in the leagues.

“I’m really fortunate to be a part of it and it’s really exciting.”

Mawene was on the bench for the Shrimpers’ 1-1 draw with Gateshead on Tuesday night.

And the 21-year-old – who will also be in the squad for Saturday’s clash with Forest Green Rovers – is keen to play his part in helping Kevin Maher’s side.

“I’m really fortunate to have this opportunity,” said Mawene.

“This is a club that are ambitious and I want to help get them to where they want to be.

“The lads have grafted for so much of the season and it’s important I come in ready to contribute whatever way that looks like.”

Mawene has made nine first team appearances for Preston and also benefitted from a loan spell at Newport County last season where he played 16 times.

“It was massive for me, not just football wise but also lifestyle wise and adapting to being far away from home,” said Mawene.

“I was really fortunate to have that experience with Newport

“I’d have loved to have played more but football being football we can’t all get what we want but it definitely put me in good stead for this loan.”

And Mawene cannot wait to get back in action.

“I like to think I can go box to box, get in and around tackles and start smashing people,” said Mawene.

“I want to get back into that competitive environment and this is something I really wanted to get done.

“I really wanted the deal to go through because I want to be part of what this club is building towards.

“I want to contribute everything I can, running hard and dying on that pitch.”

Mawene has been training hard and is keen to do all he can to make the most of the opportunities coming his way.

“It’s important to stay ready because they’re going to need bodies and lads who are ready to contribute,” said Mawene.

“I need to keep on top of myself and I’m so excited to get started.”

Mawene – who could make his debut against Forest Green Rovers this weekend – does not have far to look for inspiration and footballing advice either.

His father Youl made more than 300 senior appearances during his own career.

And he continues to play a key part in his son’s development.

“It’s funny because he’d only talk about football when he could relate to me,” said Mawene.

“He wouldn’t talk daily it would only be when something happened I might not be sure about.

“He said this was a no brainer and it’s exciting.

“But it’s good having that figure there who knows the game inside out.

“It’s helped me massively.”

Mawene and his dad also took a sneak peak at the Shrimpers before signing as they joined travelling fans in the away end at Carlisle United.

And Mawene could not believe the number of Blues fans behind the goal.

“I was honestly surprised about the attendance,” said Mawene.

“There were so many fans there and I loved that.

“It was a long journey to see nearly 700 fans there took me and my dad a bit by surprise.

“The fans kept on coming through the gates and we didn’t know where we were going to stand.

“I enjoyed watching and there’s so much talent in the squad.

“It’s a team that will challenge this year.”
