Arsenal are said to be preparing contract talks for a key player ahead of the summer.

Arsenal are said to be in new contract talks with one of their best players ahead of the summer. The Gunners are well on track to end their title drought, currently seven points ahead of Manchester City having played a game more, at least at time of writing.

Mikel Arteta and his players deserve plenty of credit, but much of Arsenal’s success is owed to the superb level of depth in the squad this season.

Between them, Andrea Berta and Arteta have built a squad that is spoilt for riches, with incredible depth in every position. With that in mind, this summer will be an interesting one, with Arsenal having no real glowing needs.

Arteta may still strengthen if the right opportunity presents itself, but keeping this squad together will be a challenge in itself. Some of the top players who are not playing every week may get the opportunity to go elsewhere and start, while some of the very best players may attract huge offers.

One of the players who is foundational to this Arsenal team is holding midfielder Declan Rice. Many baulked at the fee the Gunners paid to get him from West Ham, but it has turned out to be one of the most important signings in recent history.

The BBC now say Arsenal are preparing to reward Rice for his importance to the team by offering him a new deal. The deal would see Rice secure a pay rise, and he is already earning 240,000 per week.

Rice is already under contract until 2028, while Arsenal also have an option to extend that deal by a year. But a new deal would ensure he is not tempted by any big offers from other clubs around the world in the near future.
