Kyler Murray Drops Strong Message on Vikings' QB Carousel

Kyler Murray knows all too well what he's getting into with the Minnesota Vikings.

Murray is joining a Vikings franchise that has been through 10 starting quarterbacks since 2016 alone, and the instability goes back even further than that. The former No. 1 pick is coming in on a one-year prove-it deal and will have to compete with 2024 No. 10 pick J.J. McCarthy, who delivered mixed results in 2025.

“I know what my skill set brings to the game. I know what I’m capable of,” Murray told reporters on Thursday. “I’m ready to come in to compete. I can’t wait to be under his tutelage and get to go to war with not only Jets (wide receiver Justin Jefferson), but (coach Kevin O’Connell) too.”

Minnesota has a Super Bowl-ready roster despite a 9-8 record last year due to injuries and quarterback struggles by McCarthy, Max Brosmer and Carson Wentz at times. Murray had mixed results with the Arizona Cardinals over six seasons, but he has a shot to do what few bigger-name quarterbacks have done in Minnesota - produce a career year and lead the team to the NFC Championship Game.

Randall Cunningham was the first to do that in 1998 when he led a 15-1 squad, as he frequented big throws to Hall of Fame wide receiver Randy Moss, a rookie at the time. Brett Favre then did likewise with a career year in 2009 as he led the Vikings to the brink of a Super Bowl appearance, but a late interception derailed things, as Murray lamented on Thursday.

Murray will have Jefferson, who has dominated at times and is considered one of the league's best, and the Vikings are one of the stronger defensive teams in the league. That said, Murray knows as the Vikings fan himself that many other higher-profile veteran quarterbacks did not fare as well as Cunningham or Favre in those two seasons.
