Sky Sports pundit Charlie Austin has urged ARSENAL manager Mikel Arteta to make what he described as a “brave decision” by dropping vice-captain Bukayo Saka for the upcoming Premier League clash against Everton and handing Noni Madueke a starting opportunity instead.
Speaking during a discussion about Arsenal’s recent attacking performances, Austin suggested the Gunners could benefit from fresh energy on the wing and argued that Madueke’s direct style might offer a different threat against Everton’s defence.
Saka has been one of Arsenal’s most influential players in recent seasons and remains a key figure under Arteta, contributing goals and assists while also carrying leadership responsibility as the club’s vice-captain. However, Austin believes that even established stars should not be guaranteed a starting place if competition within the squad can raise performance levels
ARSENAL head into the Everton match looking to maintain their momentum near the top of the Premier League table. Arteta’s side have relied heavily on their attacking players this season, with Saka playing a key role in the team’s forward play.
“When [Madueke]’s come on, the performances he’s been putting in warrant starting. But the issue he has is the fact Arsenal’s Starboy plays in the same position as him. It’s going to take the manager to make a brave decision to make that change.”
“If I’m Noni Madueke, I’m asking that question, ‘What more can I do?’ Because when he came on, he changed the game in Arsenal’s favour. He got on the ball, ran at defenders and made things happen. In the time Saka was on the pitch, he didn’t.”
Will Arteta drop Saka?
Saka has been one of *ARSENAL*’s most reliable and influential players for several seasons, and Arteta has consistently trusted him in big Premier League matches. As vice-captain, Saka is not just a key attacking outlet but also an important leader in the squad. In crucial fixtures, managers typically rely on their most dependable players, and Saka falls firmly into that category.
While the argument for Madueke has some merit — particularly his pace and willingness to take defenders on — Arteta has rarely sidelined Saka when he is fully fit. The England international’s ability to create chances, stretch defences and contribute goals makes him central to Arsenal’s attacking system.
That said, squad competition is important, especially during a long and demanding season. Madueke could still play a role, either as an impact substitute or through rotation in other fixtures. His direct style might be useful if Arsenal need to change the tempo of the game.
