The Green Bay Packers entered the 2026 NFL offseason knowing that they would need a new backup quarterback.

After two years of elite backup quarterback play, Malik Willis hit the free agency market as one of the top players available. Sure enough, he landed a lucrative three-year, $67.5 million contract from Jeff Hafley and the Miami Dolphins.

With Willis officially no longer in town, the Packers will need to look into the quarterback market. Plenty of names have been mentioned as potential options for Green Bay.

Among those names are Justin Fields, Anthony Richardson, and now Kirk Cousins.

Cousins was named a potential fit for the Packers by ESPN’s Bill Barnwell. Fans quickly took to social media to share their thoughts about the team possibly adding Cousins.

“For a cheap price, sure. Why not?” one fan wrote.

Another comment read, “I pray we don’t put money into a backup.”

“This would be awesome. Kirk is a great individual & QB,” a third commenter said.

A fourth comment said, “Won’t mind in vet min and 1 year. Grab a backup in 2027 draft which is loaded.”

“Would love him cheap. Great character guy that would win games if an injury,” a fifth fan wrote.

There is a clear mixture of reactions to the option. However, the consensus is that the Packers would be wise to consider Cousins. He would be more than capable of stepping in and starting games if Jordan Love were to go down with injury.

What Would Kirk Cousins Bring to the Packers Behind Jordan Love?

During the 2025 NFL season with the Atlanta Falcons, Cousins played in 10 games. He started the season off as the backup, but stepped into the starting role after Michael Penix Jr. went down with injury.

Last season, the 37-year-old quarterback completed 61.7 percent of his pass attempts for 1,721 yards, 10 touchdowns, and five interceptions. He played in 14 games in 2024 and threw for 3,508 yards, 18 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions, while completing 66.9 percent of his passes.

Cousins is still a capable NFL quarterback. Depending on the price tag, he could be a top-tier option for Green Bay.

Anthony Richardson has emerged as a likely target as well. ESPN’s Stephen Holder reported on Saturday, March 14, that the Packers were a team to monitor for the former No. 4 overall pick.

“Update on Colts QB Anthony Richardson, who is available via trade. No deal is imminent, per multiple sources. There are interested teams, but the dust is still settling from free agency,” Holder wrote. “One particular team to monitor: the Green Bay Packers.”

Expect to hear more about Green Bay’s search for a new backup quarterback in the near future. Whether or not Cousins is a target remains to be seen, but the fit would make sense.
