Green Bay Packers linked to former top-four draft pick at quarterback

The Green Bay Packers lost backup quarterback Malik Willis in free agency, as Willis signed a lucrative three-year contract with the Miami Dolphins.

It seems as though the Packers might already have a replacement in mind.

According to Stephen Holder of ESPN, the Packers are a team to monitor when it comes to Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson. Other teams are interested in the Florida product.

Richardson, the No. 4 overall pick from the 2022 NFL Draft, is on the trading block after spending the first three seasons of his career in Indianapolis. Richardson threw for 2,400 yards 11 touchdowns and 13 interceptions across those three seasons.

Obviously Green Bay’s interest in Richardson would be for a reserve role, as Jordan Love is firmly entrenched as the starter for the Packers. But, Love has missed a couple of games in each of the past two seasons, so the Packers want to make sure that they have a decently reliable insurance plan in place.

Plus, Willis just showed that a player can parlay playing well as the backup in Green Bay into a lucrative contract as a starter elsewhere, and that’s a path that Richardson could try to follow, as it seems unlikely that he’ll land anywhere with an opportunity to start in 2026.

For those reasons, a pairing of Richardson and the Packers could potentially make sense for both sides.
