Doug Martin Police Release Footage From Mysterious Death
The sequence begins with 911 calls: one from the homeowner reporting a break-in (noting it was the second occurrence), and another from Martin’s mother, who informed dispatchers that her son had left home on foot amid a mental health emergency after not sleeping for three days and taking sleeping pills.
Surveillance video captures Martin breaking through a fence, entering a backyard, yelling, and smashing a window to gain access to the residence as an alarm sounded. Officers arrived, identified themselves, and repeatedly instructed him to come out with hands up, but he did not comply. A watch commander requested paramedics early in the response.
Body cam footage shows officers entering through the broken window and attempting to communicate with Martin, who was in a bathroom. When he emerged, a brief struggle occurred before multiple officers subdued him on the ground, urging him to calm down. He was handcuffed, with officers assuring him help was coming. One officer unholstered a taser but did not deploy it.
While awaiting paramedics, officers checked for breathing and pulse. Once private paramedics arrived, challenges arose getting a gurney inside, so Martin was carried out. He was found to have stopped breathing, leading officers to remove handcuffs and begin CPR. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Here is the video:

Martin’s death remains under investigation by the Alameda County coroner’s office (no autopsy or toxicology results released yet), Oakland PD’s homicide section, internal affairs, the Alameda County DA, and the Oakland Community Police Review Agency. Involved officers were placed on administrative leave per policy.
His former agency, Athletes First, issued a statement on behalf of the family shortly after his passing: Martin’s parents had contacted authorities earlier for medical assistance, as he was feeling overwhelmed and disoriented. He fled his home and entered a neighbor’s residence two doors down, where he was taken into custody.
