Chelsea missed the opportunity to move third in the Premier League as they were beaten 1-0 by Newcastle on Saturday.

The Blues started the match on the front foot but were unable to impose themselves on Aaron Ramsdale’s goal, and the game plan fell apart as their high line was caught out.

One through ball was all it took to undo their defence as Joe Willock was sent racing forward with Anthony Gordon in tow. The ex-Arsenal man squared for his team-mate to tap home at the far post, and his goal proved decisive.

Chelsea appeared tired and uninspired throughout the remainder of the tie. They created chances but were wasteful when they came, with Liam Delap squandering two on his own and Trevoh Chalobah heading wide in the second half. Joao Pedro added another lowlight as he headed onto the roof of the net late in injury time.

It seems their heads were still at the Parc des Princes, where they were trounced earlier by Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League last-16 first-leg earlier this week. This performance will not leave anyone in the Stamford Bridge stands confident for the reverse fixture on Tuesday.
