After Chelsea squandered several early chances, Newcastle went in front through Anthony Gordon as he tapped Joe Willock’s square ball into an empty net to make it 1-0.

The Magpies have made a habit of conceding shortly after scoring, but were able to hold onto their lead until half-time.

Here are the Newcastle United player ratings from the match...

Aaron Ramsdale - 6

Made a good reaction save to parry Cole Palmer’s edge-of-the-box effort to safety.

Tino Livramento - 7

His first start in two months following a hamstring injury. Played a great ball through to release Joe Willock in the build-up to Newcastle’s opening goal.

Malick Thiaw - 9

Made some important interceptions and headers. Headed over from Lewis Hall’s free-kick and was unfortunate not to win a penalty after being pulled down in the box by Reece James. Defended on the front foot and did so well. Immense.

Sven Botman - 8

Dragged about a little bit by Chelsea’s dynamic front line, but stood up to the challenge. Faced a different challenge with Liam Delap in the second half but dealt with him well.

Lewis Hall - 8

Put some dangerous crosses into the box and carried the ball well while also making some important challenges. A standard Lewis Hall performance will once again leave Chelsea thinking what they could have had. Booked.

Joe Willock - 8

Had a sluggish start to the game but grew in the game well. Showed good intent and pace to break clear and square the ball to Anthony Gordon to give Newcastle the lead. Caused a few problems for Chelsea after that and got stuck in. His best performance since PSG, cut short due to an injury issue.

Jacob Ramsey - 7

Continues to impress in the midfield. Calm under pressure and links play up in a tidy but purposeful manner. Saw a deflected effort parried by Robert Sanchez at the end of the first half.

Nick Woltemade - 6

A mixed bag back in the midfield. Had some shaky moments in possession but also won the ball back and battled well.

Jacob Murphy - 6

Captained the side for the first time in a competitive game from the start. Put some dangerous balls into the box and pushed forward well. Made a good challenge to stop Marc Cucurella breaking away in the first half.

Harvey Barnes - 6

Tidy and composed on the ball despite not threatening the goal. Worked hard down the left.

Anthony Gordon - 9

A determined run provided Joe Willock with an easy option to give Newcastle the lead. His 16th of the season, fifth in the Premier League. Forced a good save from Sanchez in the second half. Led the line very well on his return to the starting line-up. A real handful and never stopped.
