Max Dowman makes Premier League history as he becomes competition's youngest ever goal scorer after shining in Arsenal win

Arsenal attacker Max Dowman became the youngest ever Premier League goalscorer by scoring in the 2-0 home win over Everton on Saturday (March 14). The teenager's historic effort came in the seventh minute of stoppage time.

Just when it looked like a goalless stalemate could ensue at the Emirates, striker Viktor Gyokeres broke the deadlock a minute from time. Dowman then walked into the history books eight minutes later with a close-range finish to become the youngest goalscorer for the Gunners and Premier League history.

The earlier record had belonged to James Vaughan (16 years, 270 days) when he scored for Everton against Crystal Palace in April 2005. The record stood for nearly 21 years before Dowman claimed it.

Having come up through the ranks at the club, Dowman has now provided two goal contibutions in the English top flight. The first - an assist - came on his Premier League debut - a 5-0 home win over Leeds United on matchday two of the ongoing season.

Overall, the 16-year-old now has a goal and an assist in seven games across competitions for Mikel Arteta's side. He has played three times in the Premier League, twice in the EFL Cup, and once each in the UEFA Champions League and FA Cup, all this season.

Former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin shared his thoughts on Max Dowman creating Premier League history as Arsenal beat Everton to go 10 points clear at the top, having played two games more.

In a 16-minute cameo at the Emirates, Dowman walked into the history books by doubling his team's lead deep in stoppage time as the Gunners took a huge step towards ending their 22-year Premier League title drought.

"That moment – do not miss it," Nevin said on BBC Sport. "You have to wait for them to keep on running and keep on running. It builds, and builds and builds until Max Dowman tapped it into the net. It is a beautiful moment of football."

The Gunners now turn their attention to the UEFA Champions League, where they next host Bayer Leverkusen in the Round of 16 second leg on Tuesday (March 17), having drawn the first leg 1-1 in Leverkusen earlier in the week.
