Hermansen comes up huge as West Ham hold Man City to a dramatic draw

West Ham United eked out a dramatic 1-1 draw against Premier League title hopefuls Manchester City at the London Stadium, handing their survival hopes a massive boost.

Despite sitting narrowly behind 17th-placed Nottingham Forest, West Ham headed into this match in high spirits after beating Fulham 1-0 in their last league outing to halt a three-game winless run.

West Ham’s confidence received a further boost last weekend as they squeaked past Brentford in the FA Cup round of 16 on penalties, setting up an exciting quarter-final tie against Leeds United.

Locked together with Forest on 28 points, Nuno Espirito Santo’s side had hoped to follow in the footsteps of the Tricky Trees, who secured a stunning 2-2 draw at the Etihad Stadium in the previous round.

However, Bernardo Silva inspired Man City to a perfect start, breaking the deadlock just after the half-hour mark after getting on the receiving end of a teasing pass from Omar Marmoush.

Three points were imperative for Pep Guardiola’s side after Arsenal clinched a last-gasp home win over Everton earlier today to extend their lead at the top of the table to ten points.

Silva’s opener was nothing less than what the Cityzens deserved for everything they did in the first half, yet they failed to muster enough scoring chances from their overwhelming possession.

Although West Ham had just 30% possession and never truly tested Gianluigi Donnarumma, they drew level from their first and only shot in the first half, with Konstantinos Mavropanos heading home Jarrod Bowen’s corner-kick delivery.

Man City came close to restoring their lead on the stroke of half-time, but winter signing Antoine Semenyo fired his close-range shot off target after being teed up by Erling Haaland.

Linked with a mega-money move to either Barcelona or Real Madrid (via [TEAMtalk](https://www.teamtalk.com/news/blockbuster-erling-haaland-transfer-real-madrid-barcelona-massive-man-city-update-exclusive)), Haaland had a miserable first half, but chances finally started coming his way after the break.

After a relatively dull start to the second half, the visitors created their first real chances after Semenyo’s miss in the 61st minute. Haaland found himself unmarked inside the box, but Mads Hermansen made a superb save to thwart his attempt.

The 25-year-old goalkeeper came up huge only six minutes later to deny Matheus Nunes, who received a defence-splitting ball inside the box but failed to squeeze past the Dane.

Knowing a point would allow them to spend the night outside the bottom three, West Ham gradually dropped deeper and focused on protecting their goal, hoping to frustrate Man City and see out a hard-earned draw.

Guardiola tried to shake his team up with a double change at the hour mark, but it was the 75th-minute substitute, Tijjani Reijnders, who came closest to breaching West Ham’s low defensive block.

Indeed, the former AC Milan midfielder unleashed a fantastic shot from a mid-range free kick, only for his effort to rattle off the crossbar after a fingertip save from Hermansen.

Despite making four subs in the second half, Guardiola, who admitted he ‘cannot play the same XI every three days’ (via [Sky Sports](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11679/13519208/pep-guardiola-manchester-city-boss-stands-by-team-selection-against-real-madrid-i-cant-play-same-xi-every-three-days)), could only watch his side waste chance after chance as the final whistle approached.

Meanwhile, West Ham fought tooth and nail to endure a late siege, ‘parking the bus’ in the closing stages and throwing bodies in front of everything as they desperately tried to hold on for a valuable point.

Former Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi almost undid the Irons’ hard work in the dying moments, but he skied the ball well over the bar from just a few yards out.

As a result, West Ham could finish Matchday 30 in the safe zone if Forest fail to beat Fulham at the City Ground tomorrow.
