Rams' biggest need has unexpected Puka Nacua and Davante Adams impact

The Los Angeles Rams are going all-in for the 2026 NFL season. Matthew Stafford is coming back for what might be his final season. If they don't go all-in now, it'll be a major waste.

But, after the first week of the new league year, with Kamren Curl, Jaylen Watson, and Trent McDuffie in the secondary, what exactly do the Rams even need? They're already in a great spot, but there is still one position that could use some help.

And unexpectedly, the biggest need according to Nate Atkins of The Athletic is on offense, and specifically, at wide receiver. Despite having Davante Adams and Puka Nacua under contract, the Rams could use another wide receiver.

Rams' biggest need is WR to pair with Adams, Nacua

"After bringing in three big-name defensive backs," Atkins writes, "perhaps the only need that stands out on offense or defense now is wide receiver."

But why is WR the biggest need? The Rams have both Nacua and Adams; they should be more than good enough to lead a WR room as they did in 2025 for the Rams.

The issue, beyond simply adding depth with Tutu Atwell now in Miami, is that both Adams and Nacua aren't under contract beyond 2026.

Adams is going to be a free agent next offseason when he turns 34 years old. The Rams need a future plan beyond Adams. But that's not all. Nacua is in the final year of his rookie contract.

Retaining Nacua is going to cost a fortune. Combined with their other looming 2023 free agents like Steve Avila and Bryon Young, the Rams might not be able to keep both Adams and Nacua.

Fortunately, the Rams have a prime asset to land a new, young, standout wide receiver. Thanks to a trade-down with the Atlanta Falcons in 2025's NFL Draft, the Rams own the 13th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.

Taking one of the top receivers in Carnell Tate, Makai Lemon, or Jordyn Tyson is very much in play for the Rams at 13th overall. They need a long-term solution at wide receiver with Adams and Nacua in the final years of their deals.

While Nacua isn't likely going anywhere, the Rams do need an Adams replacement. And what better way than to draft one early in the 2026 NFL Draft with their bonus pick after some savvy moves last year.
