Could Seahawks' DeMarcus Lawrence retire? What a former teammate thinks

One potential wrinkle that could be added to the Seattle Seahawks’ offseason has to do with DeMarcus Lawrence.

Brock: What’s missing from the Seattle Seahawks’ RB room

An addition by Seattle in free agency a year ago, the veteran pass rusher had a tremendous season in helping the Seahawks win the Super Bowl. But after reaching the mountaintop just as he nears his 34th birthday, there has been speculation that Lawrence could opt for retirement rather than return for the second year of his three-year deal with the Hawks.

Former Seahawks defensive lineman Johnathan Hankins, who himself plans to retire this offseason, played alongside Lawrence with the Dallas Cowboys from 2022-23, and provided his own view on Lawrence’s situation with Seattle Sports’ Brock and Salk this week.

“Honestly, he shot me one text. I sent him a congrats. I believe he’s still out there partying, enjoying (the Seahawks’ Super Bowl win),” Hankins said of Lawrence. “To work as hard as he did, to go through everything he’d been through and to obviously win the Super Bowl and then a couple of days later give birth to his baby, I’m sure he got a lot going on, I’m sure he got a lot to think about.

“But just knowing him personally as a brother, I think he’ll be back. So you don’t gotta worry about that.”

Hankins added what’s behind his thinking, but also said he knows Lawrence’s situation isn’t something he can fully relate to.

“I don’t think he gonna just stop with one Super Bowl. I definitely think he’ll be back for more,” Hankins said. “But then again, like you say, he got more kids than me – I guess I got some catching up to do. I think it would be only right to run it back.”

It will be interesting to see what Lawrence ultimately decides considering how successful his first season in Seattle turned out to be after seven with the Cowboys.

“Obviously the Seahawks built a great culture there that, outside of football, just the amount of resources you have, the amount of love from the staff, from the coaches, from the players,” Hankins said. “You play the game this long, it’s kinda hard to just walk away. And to be around guys that’s hungry and want to get to the Super Bowl and win and be better, that’s a feeling that it’s kind of hard to just walk away.”
