At the heart of Newcastle United's inconsistent season has been their poor away record.

Prior to Saturday's 1-0 win at Chelsea, only relegation candidates Leeds United, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Burnley had a worse record on the road in the Premier League this season than the Magpies.

But quietly their form on the road has improved and Anthony Gordon's first half goal put the seal on a fourth away win in five games across all competitions.

Suddenly, a weakness that had threatened to cripple their season has become a strength and the timing could not be more important ahead of the end of season run-in.

With Newcastle now one point behind the top eight in the Premier League table, every point matters in their final eight games of the season if they are to secure a return to European football next season.

But, perhaps more importantly, as United gear up towards their most important game of the campaign so far against Barcelona at the Camp Nou on Wednesday, their performance at Stamford Bridge on Saturday provided the perfect template to replicate in Catalonia.

Newcastle's brilliant performance in Tuesday's 1-1 draw with the Spanish champions in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 clash at St James' Park has given them an opportunity to write some history in the second leg in Barcelona on Wednesday.

The heartbreaking fashion of Lamine Yamal's stoppage time equaliser had the potential to derail Newcastle psychologically but their response by beating Chelsea away from home was emphatic.

Newcastle will have to be punch perfect to beat Barcelona in their own back yard and the manner of their win at Chelsea was as close as it could be.

United could not count on Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes in their midfield, were forced to rest Dan Burn, Joelinton and Kieran Trippier, but emerged with their first win at Stamford Bridge for 14 years.

Eddie Howe's side had to ride out the early storm but, just as they did against Barcelona on Tuesday, the pace of their front three and runners from midfield caused Chelsea's backline all sorts of problems.

It was against the run of play when Gordon opened the scoring but Tino Livramento's incisive pass cut open the Chelsea backline. Joe Willock's searching run beat the offside trap and Gordon used his pace to keep up with his team-mate to roll the ball home after Willock unselfishly squared the ball across Blues goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.

Gordon was outstanding and carried out Howe's tactical instructions to a tee. For all of Will Osula's endeavour, Gordon showed the quality Newcastle missed up front on Wednesday night.

His return will strike fear into Barcelona. A front three of Anthony Elanga, Harvey Barnes and Gordon on Wednesday, with the pace they offer, will give Hansi Flick's side's high defensive line absolute nightmares.

Newcastle will have to be defensively perfect but they will take huge confidence from delivering a win against the odds at Chelsea, while keeping a clean sheet.

The task facing United on Wednesday is the same. If they achieve the same result, the Magpies will create history by reaching the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time in the club's history.

The template has been set. Newcastle just need to follow it.
