Commanders pursue 8604-yard QB as potential offseason addition

The Washington Commanders may be looking for their long-term backup quarterback.

They've got Marcus Mariota back behind Jayden Daniels in 2026, but beyond that, maybe they'll seek a different QB.

They're keeping their options open in the 2026 NFL Draft. They're using one of their official '30 visits' on a quarterback, Athan Kaliakmanis, according to The Athletic's Nicki Jhabvala.

Kaliakmanis began his college career with a pair of seasons at Minnesota before ending it with two campaigns at Rutgers.

His passing yardage increased each year of his college career, allowing him to total 8,604 passing yards with 55 touchdowns compared to 27 interceptions.

He also ran for 459 yards and 10 TDs in his college career.

Kaliakmanis had a strong 2025 season. He completed a career-high 62.2% of his passes for a career-high 3,124 yards and a career-high 20 touchdowns. He threw seven interceptions.

He measures up at 6-foot-4 and 205 pounds, which is prototypical QB size.

The Commanders clearly like his long-term potential or they wouldn't use one of these key pre-draft visits on him.

Daniels is obviously the quarterback of the present and the future in the nation's capital. But it's the most important position in sports, and considering the long-term outlook of the entire QB depth chart seems to be a wise move by the Commanders.
