The emotion of it feels just as real as it did yesterday evening, when he sent two Everton defenders to the turf before striding through an empty half to roll the ball into an open net, with Jordan Pickford stranded upfield.
Dowman’s goal is pure, distilled Arsenal joy, the kind you feel in your nerves before you even realise you are on your feet.
Everton had thrown everyone forward, Pickford included, and you are chewing your nails in the 97th minute with the score delicately poised at 1-0 and three vital points in the title race on the line. Suddenly, the ball breaks after excellent work from Gabriel Martinelli, and finds this skinny 16-year-old in red and white on the edge of his own box.
He shrugs off one blue shirt that tries to stop him by the neck, then another is sent to the floor and suddenly the entire Everton half, deserted, lies in front of him.
The whole stadium is somehow cheering while also holding its breath as Dowman eats up the pitch, green grass opening up ahead of him, his head checking left and right for defenders who have no chance of catching him.
Every step he takes you are shouting: “Go on… go on…”
As the ball enters the Everton box, he passes it into the empty goal. The game is won, and Dowman is the reason why.
There is absolute delirium, on the pitch, in the stands, on the touchlines, on the bench, and in homes and pubs around the world.
As many have said on social media, Sky Sports cutting together every angle of Dowman’s goal and the ensuing celebrations might just be the greatest thing they have ever produced.
