Joan Laporta and Victor Font are going head-to-head in the ongoing Barcelona election today, with the two vying to become the club’s next president.

Laporta is the incumbent, looking to get re-elected as president, whereas Font has emerged as a real force by introducing radical new ideas.

However, it appears the majority of the first-team players are in support of Laporta, with Lamine Yamal being an excellent case in point.

On the day of the election, Yamal has shown his support for Laporta by posting a photo of himself with the former Barcelona president, who has even thanked him for the support.

Laporta’s challenger Font was recently asked about Yamal, arguably Barcelona’s most valuable player right now, and his open support for Laporta.

In response, the presidential candidate explained Yamal’s point of view, adding that Laporta has only witnessed just one president during his brief career so far.

“Lamine is an employee of the club and Laporta is the only president of Barça that he has known,” he said.

It was a level-headed answer from Font, who cannot afford to antagonise Yamal owing to the young Spaniard being the most valued player in the squad as well as having a large fan following.

Font was counting on the support of club legend Lionel Messi, which would have certainly tilted the election in his favour.

However, the Argentine has opted not to meddle in the Barcelona election and has decided to stay out of the process, in a major blow for Font.

As things stand, Laporta remains the favourite to win the presidential election and get re-elected as president while Font’s bid to become the Barcelona president might fail yet again.
