All Signs Lead to 13: Wicks Time

The Green Bay Packers always have a plan. Letting Romeo Doubs out of Green Bay is part of it. Whether it is due to a crowded receiving room, with Christian Watson now healthy and playing tremendous football through mid to late 2025 season. Or Jayden Reed proving to be a true YAC receiver, perhaps 1st round pick Matthew Golden showing flashes of a potential WR1 eventually.

I tend to think it is all of that, but the confidence in a similar receiver already being in house was a reason that stood out more than the rest. Of the now three seasons Jordan Love has been the Green Bay Packers starting quarterback, two of them saw Romeo Doubs lead the receiving core in targets (’23, ’25). In 2024 however, Dontayvion Wicks would lead the room (76 TGTS).

With Romeo Doubs now gone, all signs point to Wicks taking on a bigger role, and potentially ready for the career ascending year. Wicks hasn’t had any incredible seasons yet, but then again, neither has Green Bay during the time Love has been quarterback.

Among the things that made Doubs so good, was his ability to seperate on footwork, and reliable hands that came back to the football and trusted his hands during high pressure situations, and defenders closing in. Characteristics that Dontayvion Wicks has also flashed in his young career.

In terms of generating separation, Wicks in the 2024 season would rank in the top five of the NFL overall in terms of separation across three separate platforms and graders. I believe with Doubs now gone, Love will quickly try to find a similar blanket that offer similar abilities, Wicks could be that guy.

Drops have certainly been part of the issue with Wicks thus far, but with so many mouths to feed in one room, the few targets only shine a brighter light on the mishaps when the opportunities aren’t as rich. The 2023 5th round pick out of Virginia resembles a lot of a young Davante Adams when he first entered the league.

A 2nd round pick out of Fresno State, Adams also experienced frustrations in his first 2-3 years with big drops, loudly expressed in frustration from quarterback Aaron Rodgers at the time. It would only make Adams better, and the big leap took place in Adams 4th season in the offense. Adams would record his first 100+ reception, and 1,000+ yard season in his career.

Green Bay has a surplus of talent in their current receiving room, with Doubs or without him. However, they have not seen the production from a player like Adams since he left. Going into the 2026 season, an opportunity arises for each member of the room. Romeo Doubs 85 targets in the 2025 season will need to be directed elsewhere, and don’t forget a top 5 Tight End talent in the league in Tucker Kraft hungry to get back to where he left off.

Like the big 4th down reception to convert a first down for a Packers win on Thanksgiving Day at Detroit, Dontayvion Wicks could be someone who has been waiting for an opportunity for a bigger seat at the table. What better opportunity than seeing your leading receiver depart.

Wicks will enter his 4th season next fall, a year where leaps have been proven to happen before.

Dontayvion Wicks has yet to put up any monster seasons thus far, capping out at 605 yards or less and 5 TDs.

However, 2024 separation data indicates that he's an absolutely elite separator:
