Chelsea 0-1 Newcaslte — Match Report: Posh Club Ran Out of London

Newcastle United somehow found a way to revive their hopes for European qualification with a luxurious 1–0 victory over top-five side and posh London neighborhood Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, earning only their second Premier League win at the ground in more than three decades.

Anthony Gordon’s early goal proved decisive as Eddie Howe’s side produced a brainy away performance with the XI heavily rotated as this game was sandwhiched between the two most important games of NUFC’s history in their Champions League clash against FC Barcelona.

Chelsea dominated possession for large stretches of the match but ultimately struggled to create clear chances against a compact Newcastle defence that stayed organised throughout.

The key play arrived in the 18th minute, when Tino Livramento carried the ball forward from deep without even the slightest pressure from the Blues, and threaded a pass through Chelsea’s defensive line to Joe Willock. The midfielder raced toward the goal before smoothly squaring the ball across the penalty area, where Gordon arrived to tap it into an empty net.

Newcastle continued to threaten when opportunities opened up without even having to labour to get there. Incoming goalie Robert Sanchez, replaced midweek by his now-supposedly-injured teammate after conceding _five_ to PSG, was forced into action just before the break when Jacob Ramsey’s deflected shot required an effort to keep the score at one.

Chelsea attempted to increase the tempo after the break, and substitute Liam Delap—quick but not quite precise—tested Aaron Ramsdale, who reacted nicely to deny the striker.

Despite enjoying the majority of the ball, the hosts rarely found a way through Newcastle’s defense, with the Magpies once and for all putting on a hella strong defensive effort on the day, against a Big Six club, no less.

Cole Palmer, more out than in all day long, forced a save from Ramsdale late in the first half, while Delap later dragged a promising chance wide as frustration grew among the home supporters and the Chelsea players themselves.

Newcastle remained dangerous in transition, as is Howe’s preferred style of play, with Gordon’s pace and direct running repeatedly unsettling Chelsea’s defensive line but not finding paydirt after hitting the net early in the game.

The closest the hosts came to equalising arrived late in stoppage time when Reece James struck a curling free kick that clipped the post, but Newcastle held on to secure the three points in a victory that could very well change the outcome of the Magpie season.

Speaking after the game, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe praised the resilience his side showed away from home.

“Back-to-back wins in the Premier League is huge for us,” Howe said. “We showed resilience and we haven’t done that enough. Our athleticism has returned and that’s helped our results.

“Our quick players really sprinted a lot. Anthony Gordon was magnificent. He covered an incredible amount of ground for us and had the big moment with the goal.”

Newcastle now turn their attention back to the Champions League, with Howe’s side traveling to Barcelona for the second leg of their round-of-16 tie on Wednesday, March 18, and the score tied at one goal apiece with no away-goal advantage in play.

Win and in, lose and go home, draw and play 30 more. Penalties—please, no.
