Kieran McGeeney has been one of the most entertaining managers to listen to during this year’s Allianz National Football League, and he produced another brilliant line after Armagh’s dramatic win over Dublin at Croke Park.
The Orchard County produced a superb second-half comeback to defeat Dublin 2-24 to 1-25, with one moment in particular proving decisive.
With Armagh chasing the game, Oisín Conaty burst through the Dublin defence before finishing brilliantly to the net with a stunning goal that completely shifted the momentum of the contest.
It was exactly the kind of attacking play Armagh had been criticised for lacking earlier in the campaign.
Throughout the league, some pundits had suggested that McGeeney’s side had been too conservative in front of goal, opting to take points when clear goal chances presented themselves. In a number of tight games earlier in the season, that approach was seen as costing them dearly.
Conaty’s moment of brilliance therefore felt like a timely response to those criticisms.
But when asked about the goal afterwards, Kieran McGeeney couldn’t resist delivering a typically tongue-in-cheek response.
> Yeah, listen, it was a quality goal. I was hoping he’d fist it over the bar, but sure what can you do?
>
> Wait til I get him in the corner after scoring a goal like that. I'm going to kill him.
Despite their reputation as one of the most talented attacking teams in the country, Armagh have recently been accused of playing things too safely when opportunities arise.
Against Dublin, however, they showed a far more ruthless edge.
Ger Brennan's side had been excellent in the opening half and barely missed a shot as they raced into a commanding lead at the break.
Armagh looked in serious trouble at that point, but they emerged from the interval with renewed intensity and gradually began to claw their way back into the contest.
Conaty’s goal was the defining moment of that resurgence.
The Armagh manager has been very candid and entertaining in recent post-match interviews, and Saturday night after their win over Dublin was no different.
