The latest transfer talk from across the Premier League as a former Newcastle United star is linked with Manchester City.
Manchester City will sign ‘an important midfielder’ during the summer transfer window - and a former Newcastle United star is said to be under consideration for a move to the Etihad Stadium.
That was the verdict of transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano as he assessed the options available to Pep Guardiola this summer and dismissed claims one midfielder linked with a move to Newcastle over the last 18 months has been in talks with the eight-time Premier League champions. Borussia Dortmund star Felix Nmecha was said to be one option considered by the Magpies as they looked to bolster their own midfield options and the Germany international has also been linked with a move to City in recent weeks.
Barcelona midfielder Dani Olmo, who could face Newcastle in the Champions League this week, is another top star reported to be a City target - but Romano has scoffed at such talk and described any move for Nmecha as ‘not a name we have to consider’. However, the Italian was more firm in his stance that former Magpies academy product Elliot Anderson is ‘absolutely high’ on the City wish-list and is in the ‘top three, probably top two’ in their list of targets. The Geordie midfielder has become an England international since leaving Newcastle to join Nottingham Forest during the summer of 2024 - and is expected to be a big part of the Three Lions squad for this summer’s World Cup finals.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano said: “Manchester City will sign a midfielder this summer. For sure, it’s going to be an important midfielder. Man City want to go strong for a midfielderThere were links with Felix Nmecha at Borussia Dortmund, but I’m told that story was not true. Man City never opened talks for Nmecha. He’s never been on the list, so he’s not the name we have to consider.
“I told you Dani Olmo [is not happening] and I’m telling you now Nmecha, who signed a new deal with Borussia Dortmund, was never an option. But what I can tell you is that a serious target, very high on the short list of Manchester City for the summer transfer window, is Elliot Anderson, the midfielder, former Newcastle player, now at Nottingham Forest. Still nothing done, still nothing decided. It will depend on Forest—Premier League or not—it will depend on the pricing, it will depend on the player; several things.
“But Manchester City have already started thinking about the midfielder short list, and in this short list, Elliot Anderson is a name that is absolutely high. He is one of the players under consideration for the midfielder role, and I would say from my understanding, he’s in the top three—probably top two—of targets for Manchester City this summer. Elliot Anderson is a top target for Manchester City, so I expect City to make moves for the player in the next weeks and months because he’s super appreciated.”
