Chelsea should secure a free agent move for a surprise player this summer
Chelsea are hoping to finish the season strongly under Liam Rosenior as the Blues head coach targets a successful first season at Stamford Bridge.
The former Strasbourg boss arrived to replace Enzo Maresca in January and has had a largely successful time so far, despite disappointing results against the likes of Arsenal, Leeds United and Burnley.
The Blues have been famed for their talented young squad, but the belief is that there are still elements missing if the west London club are to take the next step to seriously challenge for league titles.
Multiple players have already been linked with the club ahead of next summer as the early rumour mill begins to live a life of its own. With many big-name players set to become free agents this summer, the Premier League’s biggest clubs are on red alert for the most astute of signings. Chelsea might look to add a player who is set to be out of contract – with one star available who could be the right man to take the Blues to a new level.
Former Chelsea star Antonio Rudiger might be available for nothing this summer
Former Chelsea centre-back Antonio Rudiger is set to become a free agent this summer when his contract at Real Madrid expires, and the west London club could do far worse than to secure a return for the German to Stamford Bridge.
Rudiger is 33 and it is fair to say that he is no longer at the peak of his powers, with injury issues limiting the dominant centre-back to just 14 appearances this season at the time of writing – though 13 of those have been starts. The German’s pedigree within the game needs no introduction and he is a two-time Champions League winner, once with Chelsea and once with Real, while he also won the Europa League with the Blues.
It has been well documented that Chelsea have lacked experienced leaders, particularly at the back where it is most important, ever since Thiago Silva departed the club in 2024. While Rudiger does not quite have the same stature and is unlikely to have the astounding longevity of the Brazilian, on a short two-year deal he could provide some of the trophy-winning nous and experience which is lacking at Stamford Bridge at present.
Why Rudiger could be an ideal free agent signing for Chelsea
Multiple Premier League clubs have been linked with Rudiger, from Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United to league leaders Arsenal. Chelsea were previously linked back in November and in the January window but reports have gone strangely quiet, considering the genuine value which the veteran defender would bring to the Blues’ squad.
It should, perhaps, come as no surprise that Chelsea are expected to stick with more youthful signings this summer. But that does not mean that one outlier cannot be brought in to really turn the tide at the club. Rudiger would lead by example both on and off the pitch, is most likely still a far better option than most of the other centre-backs on the club’s books at present – and has been proven to know as well as anyone how to deal with Manchester City’s Erling Haaland.
If Rudiger is to depart the Bernabeu and return to the English top flight as frequent reports currently suggest, it might come back to bite Chelsea if they allow their former Champions League-winning star to go elsewhere.
