While the main focus of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ offseason has been trying to upgrade an abysmal pass rush, there are still rumors that they could make some sneaky moves to better improve the offense. Baker Mayfield is still the man in Tampa, but that does not mean that the role of QB2 can’t get a revamp. That is why some could say a Colts castoff could be in the running to fill that role.

According to several reports, a trade for Anthony Richardson could be in the cards for the Bucs to ensure that the QB position remains solid. Mayfield’s contract will be up at the end of the year, and while he’ll most likely extend, the Bucs don’t want to be lost in all that uncertainty. Also, for only a Day 3 pick, the 6-3, 244 pound QB could be a tempting option.

A High-Upside Gamble for Tampa Bay

The rare blend of size and speed that Richardson brings to the table could convince the Bucs that down the road, he could be more than a competent backup. He also has some of the best arm strength in the entire NFL, as evidenced by several incredible throws.

Anybody else randomly think about this Anthony Richardson throw?

The only knock against Richardson has been his inconsistency, as he has only played in 15 NFL games, with only an 8-7 record, 11 touchdowns, and thirteen interceptions. To make matters worse, his career completion percentage hovers right around 50 percent. Still, as a young QB who was drafted at the age of 20, he hasn’t been given much of a chance to succeed with the Colts. A move could serve him well.

For the Bucs, not only do they address a weakness in their roster, but they also could prepare themselves for the ultimate disaster. Mayfield will command a hefty sum, perhaps in the region of 50 million dollars per year. While it would take a lot for Richardson to find himself as the starter in Tampa, his development as a potential backup for the Bucs could help him be prepared if need be.

Why Richardson Could Still Have Trade Value

Also, the Bucs could take advantage of potential playing time for Richardson next season. Should he get some snaps next year, he could attract more interest, and as a result, more teams clamoring for his services. The Bucs could certainly use him as collateral further down the road to attract more draft capital.

As of right now, the Bucs have been rumored to have checked in with Richardson, but there have been no further developments. They have already signed former Bengals backup QB Jake Browning, who has proven highly capable of performing in a pinch, but with Richardson, they could get a younger option who could mean more down the road.

Even if the Bucs don’t acquire Richardson, chances are they could sneak back into the market at any time. The Bucs may even present Richardson with the best chance to start over the next couple of years and establish himself as a game changer at the position.

No matter what, a move for Richardson could definitely shake up the game plan for the Bucs in the near future.
