“I Cringe Every Time”: NFL Legend Kurt Warner Has Advice for Young QBs

Hall of Fame NFL quarterback Kurt Warner recently offered advice to young passers trying to refine their mechanics. The former Super Bowl champion urged quarterbacks to prioritize accuracy and proper technique over pure throwing velocity.

Warner shared his perspective on social media while discussing a common trend he sees among developing quarterbacks. He explained that he often notices young players leaning backward while attempting to generate extra power on their throws, a habit he believes can hurt consistency.

According to Warner, the desire to produce maximum velocity can sometimes lead quarterbacks to sacrifice the fundamentals that make passing efficient. He pointed out that falling away from a throw may increase arm strength on certain attempts but often reduces balance and control during the motion.

Instead, Warner emphasized the importance of transferring body weight through the throw and finishing into the front leg. Proper mechanics, he believes, allow quarterbacks to deliver the ball with better timing and accuracy, two traits that are critical for sustained success in the NFL.

Warner recently shared his thoughts about how young quarterbacks are playing these days. This can be seen in a post he made on his official X account.

“I know a lot of ppl teach it – but I cringe every time I see a young QB sling the ball for velocity & have weight leaning back so they slightly fall away from throw!

I get that it adds velocity – but no one will ever convince me this could ever make you more efficient/accurate than fully transferring your weight through throw & into your front leg!

Be careful when the most important thing is velocity and not accuracy… you can win with limited arm strength, you will never win with limited accuracy!” Warner tweeted.

Warner’s perspective carries weight given his own path to stardom and his reputation for precision passing. During his career with the St. Louis Rams and the Arizona Cardinals, he became known for sharp decision making and accurate ball placement rather than overwhelming arm strength.

The veteran passer’s message serves as a reminder that quarterback play is built on efficiency as much as power. Warner believes players can succeed with modest arm strength, but without accuracy and sound mechanics, sustained success at the position becomes far more difficult.
