The Washington Commanders did not just add another running back this offseason; they brought back a built-in connection. When the franchise signed Rachaad White, it quietly reunited one of college football’s most productive backfield partnerships with quarterback Jayden Daniels. And judging by White’s first comments after the deal, the chemistry is already alive and well.
Their connection extends beyond just playing football together; the relationships they have developed through their careers at Arizona State are still strong today. After arriving in Commanders, White showed how strong that connection was by joking about how much he already knows about his new signal caller, saying he could possibly reveal some of the secrets he is keeping on him

On March 12, 2026, the Commanders signed White to a one-year contract, as reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The signing allows White to be back with Daniels, the former college quarterback he played with and one of White’s best friends in football.
When White held his introductory press conference, he made the connection apparent with a joyful comment that caught fans’ attention.
“Obviously, it feels great. [Jayden] is my best friend, I know a lot about him. Whatever y’all want to know, I’ll give y’all the secrets …”

Although this comment was meant to be light-hearted, it offers insight into the on-field chemistry that has developed between the two since they have had a chance to see how each performs in games.
The two players were teammates at Arizona State during the 2021 season, when they established one of the most dynamic duos in the Pac-12, combining for over 1,700 rushing yards and 21 touchdowns. Now we see both of them using White’s dual-threat ability to be an outlet for Daniels whenever plays were disrupted, especially in passing situations.
Now the Commanders are hoping that the same formula translates to the NFL.The Commanders had been searching for more firepower in the backfield. Offensive coordinator David Blough made that clear during his introductory press conference earlier this offseason. The need became even more obvious after veteran Chris Rodriguez Jr. left in free agency to join the Jacksonville Jaguars.
White immediately fills that gap.The former third-round pick spent four seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and proved he can be a dual-threat weapon. His best season came on 10 December 2023, when he produced more than 1,500 yards from scrimmage, showing off his explosiveness as a runner and consistency as a receiver out of the backfield.
This is why the Washington Commanders were missing this skill set since veteran running back Austin Ekeler ruptured his Achilles tendon at the beginning of last year.Just as important, White arrives with built-in trust from the quarterback. Daniels already knows where White will be on check-downs, option routes, and scramble drills. That familiarity can accelerate offensive chemistry almost immediately.
The move also hints at Daniels’ growing influence inside the organisation. As Commanders continue building around their young quarterback, the front office appears willing to surround him with players he already trusts.
For the 27-year-old, the one-year contract represents a prove-it opportunity. If the reunion sparks the offence the way the Commanders hope, the deal could easily turn into something longer.
For now, the message is simple. Daniels and White are back in the same backfield, and the Commanders may have found the comfort combo their offense desperately needed.
