Chiefs' $21 million free agency signing key to 2026 bounce back?

This offseason was always going to be an interesting one for the Kansas City Chiefs.

After missing the playoffs, an overhaul of sorts was needed as the roster had to be refreshed after so many years of deep playoff runs.

Many fixate on the Kenneth Walker signing and rightly so, as the Chiefs' run game last year was horrible.

But ESPN's Aaron Schatz has his eyes on another signing the Chiefs have made, and it might have gone under the radar.

Defensive tackle Khyiris Tonga. Schatz believes Tonga is the Chiefs' most underrated signing of the offseason.

"This was a player the Patriots wanted to bring back, but they couldn't get an extension finished during the regular season," Schatz wrote. "Tonga was an important part of the New England run defense as a nose tackle in 2025. He had a stop rate of 83%; in other words, 83% of his run tackles prevented a successful play for the offense. The league average for interior linemen was around 71% last season."

Is Tonga Chiefs' missing piece?

Well, the Chiefs needed help on the interior of their defensive line as Chris Jones can't do it all himself.

And the franchise got a stud who helped the New England Patriots' defense be one of the better teams against the run in 2025.

Tonga's signing won't make many headlines, as few defensive tackles are household names, but if he brings what he did in 2025 to the Chiefs, the defense could see an uptick in performance.

Of course, we are projecting here, but the Chiefs have made a couple of shrewd signings so far in free agency, and maybe Tonga could turn out to be the best.
