Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle United, Player Ratings: Mag-pied

We’ve seen plenty of Chelsea defeats over the years, but this one felt fairly unique amid all of that. It’s hard to think of a more flat, boring, toothless approach and execution, especially given the magnitude of the game at hand. Newcastle weren’t much better, but they take the win thanks to a defensie breakdown.

Sánchez didn’t necessarily stand above the rest, but he did make all the saves you’d expect him to make, and did not commit any too many egregious turnovers. The bar is low, but he cleared it easily. Only Moisés Caicedo (18), João Pedro (15), and Reece James (13) have more player ratings podium finishes than Bob (12).

Eleven of the fourteen players who played for us in this game finished in the “subpar” range, and that seems about right. No one rose above, only a couple were particularly worse than our baseline average: efforts disappointing not just on an individual level, but on the collective as a whole.

Reecey hit the post in added-time, which was the closest we’d come to scoring. He played in midfield the first half, but looked better at right back in the second.
