Opinion: Liam Rosenior must drop£70m Chelsea star against PSG

Wesley Fofana now appears to have finally overcome his injury problems, making him an option for the second leg of Chelsea’s last 16 tie versus Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

It is likely that Liam Rosenior will start him, perhaps alongside Trevoh Chalobah, who has been a regular this season.

However, the Chelsea head coach really should be thinking about dropping the defender.

Liam Rosenior should drop Wesley Fofana for PSG clash

Fofana is a £70m centre-half, joining Chelsea from Leicester City for that figure back in the summer of 2022.

Against Newcastle United over the weekend, though, he looked more like a £7m defender. Fofana has come in for a lot of criticism for the goal that Chelsea conceded, and rightly so. The Frenchman could have done more to prevent Anthony Gordon from scoring, or at least made his life a bit more difficult.

In the first leg against PSG, he did not cover himself in glory either. Filip Jorgensen has taken most of the flak after his costly error, but Fofana also had a bad game in Paris.

According to Sofascore, Fofana won just one tackle at the Parc des Princes and was dribbled past once.

What Fofana has going for him is the fact that Chelsea’s other centre-halves do not have as much natural ability as he does; otherwise, he would probably be getting dropped. Levi Colwill perhaps does, but the England international is still out injured.

Wesley Fofana can still be a success at Chelsea

Some Chelsea fans are starting to lose patience with Fofana, which is understandable.

Again, Fofana cost the club £70m and has barely played because of injuries. The former Leicester man has also been in the headlines for the wrong reasons at times and even admitted that he thought about joining Marseille.

Fofana is still a talented centre-back, though. Chelsea fans have seen glimpses of that, while he also proved himself at Leicester.

The France international is still 25 as well; he has not reached his peak. Ultimately, Fofana can still come good at Chelsea, but fans will want to see more and soon.
