Newcastle United hopeful key duo back v Barcelona - but 3 already confirmed out against…

Newcastle United injury news: The latest on Bruno Guimaraes, Lewis Miley, Sandro Tonali & co ahead of Barcelona and Sunderland matches.

The Magpies will head to Spain full of confidence that they can upset the odds after they recorded their first win at Stamford Bridge in almost 14 years at the weekend. However, like that win in London, they will have to play on Wednesday without their captain Bruno Guimaraes who remains sidelined with a muscle injury.

Sandro Tonali also missed out at the weekend, although there is hope that he will be fit enough to feature at the Spotify Camp Nou. With a clash against Sunderland on the horizon at the weekend also, here, we take a look at Newcastle United’s current injury list and when those sidelined players could be expected back in action.

Newcastle United injury news & estimated return dates

Fabian Schar - ankle injury

Schar suffered a fairly serious ankle injury against Leeds United in January, although initial prognosis on the injury was not as severe as first thought. There is hope he can return to action before the end of the season - and that could come as early as next month if all goes well.

Estimated return date - Bournemouth (h) 18/04/26

Emil Krafth - knee injury

Krafth hasn’t featured for Newcastle United since their defeat against West Ham at the London Stadium at the beginning of November. Howe confirmed last month that the defender has undergone surgery on a knee injury and that it is likely his season is over.

Estimated return date - 26/27 pre-season

Lewis Miley - leg injury

Miley hasn’t featured since Newcastle United’s draw with PSG. The teenager has suffered an injury to his leg and whilst there was hope that it was not a significant problem, it has been enough to keep him out of action since the end of January. Howe has confirmed that the club are taking extra caution over his recovery but there is a possibility he is back in action very soon.

Estimated return date - Barcelona (a) 18/03/26

Bruno Guimaraes - muscle injury

Guimaraes suffered an injury late on against Spurs last month and has not featured for the Magpies since. An estimated eight to ten weeks on the sidelines will keep Guimaraes out of action until April.

Guimaraes is expected to miss 12 matches in all by the time he returns to full fitness, including the Tyne-Wear derby against Sunderland. An exact date for his return after the international break could be determined by Newcastle United’s progress in the Champions League. Guimaraes will, though, travel to Barcelona with his teammates this week, although he will not feature in a playing capacity.

Estimated return date - Champions League quarter-final on 6/7 April OR Crystal Palace (a) 11/04/26 (match could be moved to Sunday if Crystal Palace reach Conference League quarter-finals)

Sandro Tonali - illness

Tonali was not named in Howe’s matchday squad on Saturday evening, much to the surprise of many. The Italian international, who missed out at Stamford Bridge, will be desperate to feature at the Camp Nou on Wednesday night.

Estimated return date - Barcelona (a) 18/03/26
