Martin Keown defends himself amid accusations of Arsenal bias in fiery Simon Jordan clash

Martin Keown has hit back at claims he has shown bias towards Arsenal as a pundit this season.

The former defender was accused of a 'lack of objectivity' by Simon Jordan on Monday.

It followed Jordan's comments following Arsenal's Champions League last 16 first leg against Bayer Leverkusen.

The talkSPORT co-host argued Keown was 'the grand fromage of bias' for his stance on the Gunners' late penalty in Germany.

Mikel Arteta's side equalised in the 89th minute after Noni Madueke had won a spot-kick.

Kai Havertz subsequently stepped up to score from 12 yards.

Keown, who was part of TNT Sports' coverage of the match, agreed with the referee's decision to award a penalty.

Speaking after the match, he revealed that he felt Madueke received enough contact to warrant going down.

The former England international joined White & Jordan on Monday and had the accusations put to him.

When given the chance to respond, he began by asking: "I shouldn’t even be asked that sort of question. Does anyone else have that question?"

Keown continued: "They were very respected commentators. Lucy Ward - Pundit of the Year, Adam Summerton, who said they thought it was a penalty.

"I’m not the only one in the room. I’m not the co-commentator.

"I’ve taken all the information on board and I felt that, ok yes, it looks as if his foot gets trapped. So for me, I don’t think that’s being biased. I’ve just seen what I’ve seen.

"There was a penalty at the weekend that wasn’t given against Havertz."

Jordan hit back by replying: "Unfortunately for those guys, they haven’t shared the studio with you as much as we have. So we have seen it, in all its glory."

However, Keown added: "The fact was, though, you were like all those fans, the detractors of Arsenal, who tuned in the 89th minute to say, ‘Arsenal are going to lose, it’s going to blow up.’

"When that didn’t happen, you were like the angry man shouting at a man on the television who was saying, ‘no, no, no, it was a penalty’, because it didn’t go with your narrative."

Arsenal scored late on once again as they beat Everton 2-0 in the Premier League on Saturday.

The Gunners had appeared destined to be held to a goalless draw before Viktor Gyokeres' 89th minute goal.

Max Dowman then added a second in stoppage time to seal all three points.

It is not the first time Keown has been forced to defend himself over his former club this season.

He previously called out talkSPORT's Andy Goldstein for his criticism of the north London club.

However, Keown himself has also been accused of 'killing' the team with his own comments.

Wayne Rooney told the 59-year-old to 'stay silent' for the good of his old side when it came to the Premier League title race.
