The questions were always going to come. Six weeks on the sideline, the Golden State Warriors in freefall, a fanbase split between wanting their best player back and wanting him healthy for next year. Stephen Curry heard all of it. His answer was short, direct, and left no room for interpretation.

The Warriors lost 110-107 to the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden on Sunday night, their fifth straight defeat. Curry watched from the sideline, sat calmly at his locker eating popcorn after the game, and spoke to The Athletic’s Nick Friedell about where things stand. He turned 38 on Saturday. He has been out since January 30 with a runner’s knee injury. And he is not ready to give up on this season.

Some fans have suggested the smarter move is to shut Curry down entirely and get him right for next year. He understands the logic. He just does not subscribe to it. “That’s not who we are,” Curry said. “If we have stuff to play for, we play. So, I’m working to get back.”

He elaborated on what his return would need to look like. “I know we’re depleted, but the idea of my injury is just getting information by the day of, ‘Can I play safely? Be myself out there and not put myself in danger short term or long term?’ We still have stuff to play for. We’d love to see guys in a playoff series and take a swing. Hopefully, see this team that’s currently constructed healthy for a stretch to learn as much as we can and compete. That’s who we are.” When asked directly whether he still believes he will play this season, the answer came without hesitation. “For sure.”

Warriors’ Kerr Gives Curry Return Update

Curry has only recently returned to individual workouts on the court, and the organisation is taking a cautious approach with any timeline. Before Sunday’s game, Steve Kerr confirmed that Curry continues to trend in the right direction, but stopped short of putting a date on his comeback. The knee’s response to treatment is still being monitored day by day.

Kerr was open about how much the team has missed him. “I’m the luckiest coach in the league to coach him and to watch him play,” Kerr said. “Just an incredible athlete. The grace, the ability, the charisma. He’s just one of one. This is the longest stretch I can remember being without him since 2020, when he missed basically the whole season. So, we miss him. We miss watching him.” Curry flew with the team to New York on Saturday and is expected to stay with the squad for the majority of their six-game road trip.

Final Word for Golden State

The Warriors are 32-35, ninth in the West, and fighting to avoid slipping into the tenth seed in a play-in race that is tightening by the week. The hope is that Curry can return in time to catch some regular season games, find his rhythm, and give Golden State a genuine chance when the play-in tournament arrives.

Throughout their championship years, the Warriors built an identity around competing at the highest level for as long as possible. No tanking. No shutting it down. Curry is the embodiment of that standard, and he is not about to abandon it now. He has not come this far, for this long, to sit it out when there is still something to play for.
