Report: Chelsea's hopes of signing 'unbelievable' Arsenal star are already over

Arsenal defender Riccardo Calafiori has recently been linked with a move to London rivals Chelsea.

After how Wesley Fofana defended against Newcastle United over the weekend, most Chelsea supporters would probably welcome the Italian to the club.

However, a switch from the Emirates to Stamford Bridge in the summer seems very unlikely.

Arsenal have no intention of selling Riccardo Calafiori amid Chelsea interest

Last week, it was claimed that Chelsea are interested in signing Calafiori and are willing to offer him minutes in central defence.

Calafiori has mostly played at left-back this season, but the 23-year-old can also start in central defence, which seems to be his preference.

While Chelsea may be keen on Calafiori, according to TEAMtalk, Arsenal have no plans to sell him in the summer in a blow to the Blues.

Even if the Gunners were willing to part ways with the defender, it is likely that Chelsea would have to do some persuading.

Arsenal are on course to win the Premier League title, while Chelsea may not even qualify for the Champions League. Calafiori may view a move to the Blues as a step down.

Liam Rosenior would have struggled to find perfect role for Riccardo Calafiori

Calafiori is a solid defender and arguably the kind of figure that Chelsea’s backline is missing. Everton manager David Moyes recently described one block he made as “unbelievable” via Daily Cannon. With that being said, Liam Rosenior finding him a place in the team still would not have been straightforward.

The Italy international is left-footed, making the left centre-back role ideal for him. However, once Levi Colwill recovers from his ACL injury, he is going to slot straight in there.

Of course, Calafiori can play at left-back, but Marc Cucurella has been one of the best players in that position for more than a year now.

If Chelsea are going to sign a new central defender this summer, they probably need to bring in someone who is comfortable on the right. Left centre-back is unlikely to be an issue when Colwill returns.
