Why the Chiefs traded for Justin Fields

The Kansas City Chiefs have added a new quarterback.

And not just any QB, but one of the most athletic, exciting players at that position in football, when he's at his best: Justin Fields. They traded with the New York Jets to get him on Monday.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported the news on X.

"The New York Jets are finalizing a deal that will send QB Justin Fields to the Kansas City Chiefs, pending a physical, per ESPN sources. Other teams were interested, but Fields’ preference was to go to Kansas City."

Fields was the No. 11 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft out of Ohio State by the Chicago Bears.

This will now be his fourth team, after the Bears, Steelers and Jets.

His role in Kansas City will be fascinating.

Why did the Chiefs trade for Justin Fields?

The Chiefs traded for Justin Fields because they need a second quarterback.

Patrick Mahomes tore his ACL late in the 2025 season, and his availability for the start of the 2026 season is unclear.

Even if Mahomes is back, the Chiefs needed a backup. Their previous QB2, Gardner Minshew, signed with the Arizona Cardinals in the offseason.

It's a good opportunity for Fields, too. His best chance of reviving his NFL career is by learning from a great offensive mind like Andy Reid and getting to replicate a legendary QB like Mahomes.

This is a partnership that could work out well for all involved.

Fields may start Week 1, in the instance where Mahomes isn't fully healthy. Even if he doesn't, he'll be in a winning organization and have a chance to grow.

And the Chiefs get a possible Mahomes fill-in who has upside and a lot of different ways to be utilized in Kansas City's offense.

It feels like a win-win for the Chiefs and Fields.
