Jets quarterback rumor could lead to New York signing $6 million Ravens castoff

The New York Jets made a notable quarterback-centered trade last Wednesday, trading a sixth-round pick to the Las Vegas Raiders for Geno Smith (who began his NFL career with the franchise) and a sixth-round pick.

Still, it appears that the Jets aren’t finished strengthening their quarterback room just yet. According to SNY’s Connor Hughes, the Jets could sign a 32-year-old signal caller who the Baltimore Ravens recently released.

“The Jets will add another quarterback to the room with Geno Smith,” Hughes reported Friday. “Nothing is imminent, per team sources. (Darren) Mougey and Aaron Glenn plan to let the dust settle a bit more, assess their options, and then move forward."

“Carson Wentz remains an option. Offensive coordinator Frank Reich is a big fan and would love to see him added to the quarterback room behind Smith. Wentz, though, has options outside New York and is still rehabbing. While the Jets have interest, a return to Minnesota makes sense, too.”

“Cooper Rush is in the mix, as is a potential Reich reunion with Andy Dalton. Tyrod Taylor, who spent the last two seasons with the Jets, is also a candidate.”

Rush endured a miserable season with the Ravens last year. In the four games he played in, the Central Michigan product failed to record a passing touchdown, threw for only 100 yards once, and tossed four interceptions.

However, the good news is that he was relatively solid with the Dallas Cowboys before signing a multi-year deal with the Ravens (1,844 passing yards, 12 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions in 12 games), which is proof that he has the potential to be a halfway-decent comeback.

That potential could help Rush soon land another NFL gig, and based on Hughes' report, the Jets could be the team to give him his next quarterbacking opportunity in the big leagues.

It’s unlikely Rush would be high on the Jets depth chart, but he would get a chance to extend his career for at least another season.
