4 European Cities Floated For NFL Expansion Teams

The NBA is considering expanding to two more cities. Will the NFL follow suit?

ESPN's top NBA insider, Shams Charania, reported on Monday morning that the league is considering expansion to Seattle, Washington and Las Vegas, Nevada. Seattle used to have the Sonics, of course, while Las Vegas has added an NFL team, a WNBA team, an MLB team and an NHL team in recent years.

But while the NBA is considering expansion, could the NFL follow suit?

If so, would the National Football League consider expanding to European cities? The league is already playing several games a year in Europe. It wouldn't be a surprise if the league chose to expand to Europe.

Four cities have been named potential candidates for expansion in Europe:

London, England

Dublin, Ireland

Madrid, Spain

Berlin, Germany

Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio can see it happening.

"The NFL is surely paying close attention. For now, the effort to increase the total number of games focuses on expanding the regular season from 17 games to 18 (which would increase the length of the regular season from 272 games to 288). And while that could be followed by a push for 19 (and then 20), another way to grow the total number of games is to add teams," he wrote.

"Given the league's ongoing international obsession, the long-term play could entail a four-team European division in one conference and a four-team Pacific division in the other. That also could include reconfiguring the conferences from American and National to East and West."
